Liberia at 162: Shifting the paradigm.

By: Stephen Johnson

The history of Liberia has gone through many stages since its inception as a nation ranging from the Americo-Liberian and native divide to the 15 year long civil carnage. These events need not be overemphasized as they did not only create a society bewildered with sectionalism but also contributed to the enormous destruction of lives and properties which has made the task of nation building, genuine reconciliation and national renewal a daunting one. This is a history that many believe is characterize with many internal contradictions within our body politic. It is also viewed as a parochial piece of history designed to promote a specific class or group of people based on the writers' own position relative to our history-something which has resulted into many calls for the rewrite of our history.

The “Matilda Newport event” is one of the many scenarios within our history that has resulted to several claims and counter-claims about her existence, some believe that its a myth while our believe it is a reality. These belief has been influenced largely by one's position in our history. There are other events which catapults into the mayhem and blood bath we experienced firsthand during years of civil war which has lead to a complete collapse in every sector of our country. The likes of health, unemployment, and education are among the many challenges that confronts us as nation.

Paramount also is the menace corruption, this has contributed to the huge underdevelopment and extreme poverty thereby rendering our people to be reduced to beggars surviving on relief and goodwill. Corruption has eaten the very fabric of our economy and while it appears that our leaders lack the political willpower to combat, we as well meaning Liberians must bludgeon them to take responsibility and act within the framework of the law and bring those involve to justice and subsequently punish where a verdict is reached. It is only with this that the process of accountability can take the center stage within our society.

Political hustlers and gatecrashers bend on exploiting the system to enrich themselves at the expense of the mass of people must and should be brought to book, they must be prosecuted and if need be property seized so as to serve as a deterrent. Our people for too long continue to live in the prangs of poverty and depression. We must treat with scorn their vaunted boast of being “the cream dela cream” of our body politics for they are only but mere fortune hunters that are dabbling in catch phrases and inane cliches. We must play a role!

While there exist complexities in our history, it is important for us as the future generation not to set idle but step up to the many challenges and turn them into opportunities. We must adopt a progressive approach that seeks to shift the paradigm and set Liberia on the right trajectory in order for her to gain its rightful place among the comity of nations. We must do a thorough “looking glass self analysis” and set into motion a process which engenders nationalism, love for country and set forth standards that are in tone with international norms and protocols. Unless this is done, the process of providing a remedy to Liberia's titanic problem and nation building remains illusive. This should be our focus!

Happy Independence and Long Live the People of Liberia!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIVING A HAPPY LIFE...

We convinced ourselves that life will be better once we are married, have a baby, then another. Then we get disappointed and frustrated simply because our kids aren’t old enough and that all will be well when they are older. Then we are frustrated because they reach adolescence and we must deal with the enormity of adolescence life and surely we are happier when they are grown out of the teen years. We tell ourselves our life will be better when our spouse gets his/her act together, when we have a nicer car, when we can take a vacation, when we finally retired.
The truth is that there is no better time to be happy than right now. If not, when? Your life will always be fill of challenges. It is better to admit as much and to decide to be happy in spite of it all. At times, it seems like life is about to start. REAL LIFE. But then there are always obstacles along the way, an ordeal to go through, some work to be done, some time to be given, a bill to be paid, then life would start.

I have come to understand that these obstacles are LIFE! This point makes us to see that there isn’t any path to happiness, happiness itself is the path! So, enjoy every moment. Don’t wait for school to end, for school to start, to lose 15 pounds or gain 15 pounds, for work to begin, to get married, for Friday evenings, for summer, spring, fall or winter, for the beginning or the middle of the month, to die, to be reborn, for your best song to be played on the radio for a new car or your mortgage to be paid before deciding to be happy.

REMEMBER, happiness is a voyage, not a destination! There is no better time to be happy then NOW, so live and enjoy the moment. With this in mind, let’s not forget our friends for they mean a lot to us even though they are not rated as the very best, and don’t have the most wealth and haven’t won the greatest awards but they are the ones who care about us, take care of us. Those who, no matter what stay close by!

Applause dies away, trophies gather dust, and winners are soon forgotten but our friends are treasured FOREVER!

The Holy Alphabet

Although things are not perfect

Because of trial or pain

Continue in thanksgiving

Do not begin to blame

Even when the times are hard

Fierce winds are bound to blow

God is forever able

Hold on to what you know

Imagine life without His love

Joy would cease to be

Keep thanking Him for all the things

Love imparts to thee

Move out of "Camp Complaining"

No weapon that is known

On earth can yield the power

Praise can do alone

Quit looking at the future

Redeem the time at hand

Start every day with worship

To "thank" is a command

Until we see Him coming

Victorious in the sky

We'll run the race with gratitude

Xalting God most high

Yes, there'll be good times and yes some will be bad, but...

Zion waits in glory...where none are ever sad!

It's Strange, Isn't It?

1. Isn't it strange? How a 20 dollar bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping?

2. Isn't it strange? How 2 hours seem so long when you're at church, and how short they seem when you're watching a good movie?

3. Isn't it strange? That you can't find a word to say when you're praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend?

4. Isn't it strange? How difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel or ZANE GREY book?

5. Isn't it strange how everyone wants front-row-tickets to concerts or games, but they do whatever is possible to sit at the last row in Church?

6. Isn't it strange? How we need to know about an event for Church 2-3 weeks before the day so we can include it in our agenda, but we can adjust it for other events at the last minute?

7. Isn't it strange? How difficult it is to learn a fact about God to share it with others, but how easy it is to learn, understand, extend and repeat gossip?

8. Isn't it strange? How we believe everything that magazines and newspapers say, but we question the words in the bible?

9. Isn't it strange? How everyone wants a place in Heaven, but they don't want to believe, do, or say anything to get there?
We ought to change our ways of doing things and believe in God and His words, for it is only through Him that we are save and His mercy endure forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amen

DIRECTIONS TO OUR FATHER'S HOUSE.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Make a Right onto Believeth Blvd. Keep straight and go through the Green Light, which is Jesus Christ. There, you must turn onto the Bridge of Faith , which is over troubled water. When you get off the bridge, make a Right turn and Keep Straight.

You are on the King's Highway - Heaven-bound. Keep going for three miles: One for the Father, One for the Son, and One for the Holy Ghost. Then exit off onto Grace Blvd. From there, make a Right turn on Gospel Lane . Keep Straight and then make another Right on Prayer Road .

As you go on your way, Yield Not to the traffic on Temptation Ave. Also, avoid SIN STREET because it is a DEAD END. Pass up Envy Drive , and Hate Avenue . Also, pass Hypocrisy Street , Gossiping Lane , and Backbiting Blvd.

However, you have to go down Long-suffering Lane , Persecution Blvd. And Trials and Tribulations Ave. But that's all right, because VICTORY Street is straight ahead! AMEN!!!!!
